Who Invented the iPod Nano

You’ve seen the new 3G iPod nano. You might even own it. (I sure like mine…) Have you wanted to know how it was invented?

Here’s the scoop.

We all know the iPod is made by Apple Computer (gee, no kidding, right?). The original iPod is said to come from Tony Fadell’s inspiration. He started working for Apple in 2001 as a contractor, and was part of the original design team. No one person is credited with inventing the nano, but here are the details of how it came about.

The media was caught off-guard when the nano was introduced in 2005. Apple created the nano to replace the iPod Min, which already had a strong following in the middle market.

What was special about the nano? A couple things.

First, the nano uses “flash drive storage” instead of a hard disk. Flash drives are a lot more durable. I travel a lot, and my nano gets packed in carry-ons, dropped from hotel desks, and stuffed into my coat pocket all the time. It withstands hot temperatures and has sat in the rental car overnight in Minneapolis in the winter. All without a hiccup.

Apple’s since put flash storage into all except the classic iPod (which still uses a hard disk). The classic iPod needs to be handled a little more carefully than a nano, though the nano doesn’t store as much.

The iPod nano’s size is one of it’s strengths too. Flash drives are much smaller than hard disks, which you see reflected in the nano’s size. I can carry my nano in a blazer pocket without a bulge. It fits small carryons. It’s a lot less bulky on an armband.

Enough of the history lesson, where are we now? Apple launched the nano 3G (third generation) last fall, September 2007. Why mess with a good thing? To add video playback and games! Users were thrilled.

For those of you who understand such things, the 3G has a pixel density of 204 ppi shown in a 320×240 QVGA display. For the rest of us, that means the images are incredibly sharp.

As far as games, the nano 3G delivers with three to start. A healthy variety are available for download at iTunes and other download sites.

Now you know how the nano came about, and why. Happy playing!

Investing in Green Businesses

by Earth News Media

For a very long time, money used for good will was called charity, while money used to earn more money was called investing. That’s not the case anymore.

Today, the two ideas are coming together in a financial avenue called socially responsible investing. And both investors and mutual fund operators are learning that this new idea can be profitable, and do some good for the environment and society at the same time.

“Socially responsible investing means you don’t have to compromise your own personal beliefs to make money on Wall Street… whatever those beliefs are,” states Bob Guthrie, who is an investment broker with A.G. Edwards in Burlington, Vt.

Guthrie says that the idea of selectively choosing stocks for social reasons dates back to the early 1900’s. That’s when church members grouped together and refused to invest in tobacco or alcohol companies. He adds that the trend continued with investors ignoring corporations involved in the Vietnam War and those companies investing in South Africa.

But growth in this type of investing has mushroomed during the past few years as more and more investors have moved social consciousness into the mainstream of investing. And the impact is being felt.

With help from stockholders, business practices concerning the environment are starting to change, said Rob Kruger, vice president of portfolio management at Progressive Asset Management. While the issues may vary, he said companies are realizing they will suffer if they aren’t viewed as being socially responsible.

“As this investing community continues to grow, a lot of proposals are being put forward by investors at annual shareholder meetings,” Kruger said. “A whole variety of issues and activities is now being addressed.”

As part of its operation, Progressive Asset Management conducts research for socially responsible mutual funds. The firm screens companies for environmental problems or nuclear involvement — whatever issues their clients want investigated.

“As the clock ticks, companies are becoming more and more cooperative with us,” Kruger said. “A lot of them are now very anxious to talk about these social and environmental issues.”

Guthrie agrees that American corporations and business practices are aware of stockholders who are very concerned with social and environmental responsibility.

“Make sure your hard-earned capital is not invested in companies with little concern for the environment,” he advises. “Be sure to keep these things in mind when you invest and companies will too.”

Fat Burning In A Nutshell

May 19, 2008 · Filed Under News and Society · Comment
by Ricardo Daryans

At this time of year, we can use every last tip to help avoid holiday weight gain. So here are 5 fat loss tips for beginner & advanced readers.

1) No liquid calories (with the exception of a post-workout drink).

Please, no juices, sodas or sports drinks. Liquid sugar is your worst enemy when you are trying to lose fat.

Limit your alcohol intake (and don’t mix drinks, that is a double calorie bomb!).

2) No fast food.

Eating at fast foods restaurants means nothing but one thing: fat. You will not find healthy food at a fast food restaurant.

The kind of food you’ll find there is fast and cheap because of the poor quality of the food ingredients (especially the protein).

It will not be easy to change the kind of food you eat. And what will be harder is to prepare your own meals. Why should you have to do it so? Because there’s no better way to know what exactly you are taking into your mouth.

As i told you, it may be hard at the beginning, but that food will be fresh as no other, will taste better (a lot better than fast food), and, the most important thing, it will be healthier. It will make you more alert, it will not make you want to have an afternoon nap at your desk.

Make one small improvement to your nutrition everyday for the rest of your life.

3) Eat more fruits and vegetables.

Intead of eating 2 servings per day, go up to 4 servings per day by the end of the week. Even if you think you are doing great by having 5 servings per day, you still need to double that (take 2-3 weeks to work your way up to 10 servings per day).

Stick with fiber-rich fruits and vegetables - organic if possible.

Nuts are also a good choice, but not the roasted in oils ones (they may be source of trans fats). Stick to natural or dry-roasted nuts.

Don’t worry…this small amount of nuts won’t make you fat, but will fill you up and help you lose weight.

5) Exercise.

And make sure the workouts are efficient and effective. To make it easy for you to follow, stick with the Turbulence Training fat burning workout system.

Just train consistently, it doesn’t matter if you train in the morning before or after breakfast, or at night before or after dinner, or at 1pm on days when the moon is in line with Saturn…don’t worry about the details.

6) EXTRA TIP: After anytime you eat a big meal, the best you can do is to go for a walk any movement is better than sitting around watching the TV, and it will help you in the fat burning process and to control your triglycerides and cholesterol.

Choosing iPod nano Holders: Quick Tips

May 19, 2008 · Filed Under Computers and Technology · Comment
by Lydia Vaughn

Let’s talk about how to choose the right iPod nano holders for you. Did you just get a new iPod nano? Congratulations! I love my iPod nano — I bet you will too. If you’re like most of us, one of the first questions you ask (after how to download music) is how to choose a holder for your iPod nano.

There’s a wider variety of nano cases then you might expect, in a variety of stiles. You might find choosing a case more complicated than you planned.

For less than 10 dollars you can get a silicone film covering, a faux leather flip case, and a few plastic belt clips. But that’s just the starting point. You can get nano holders for your workouts, for fashion statements, to protect from wind and rain, and more.

How do you want to use your iPod nano?

Take a minute to think through your day. When do you want your nano? Would you like background music in the house when you’re starting your day? Maybe you want music for your workouts. Do you plan to listen to podcasts on the bus (train, plane)? How about when you’r driving? Will you be outside much? Are you (like me) likely to drop the nano and want it protected?

Most people actually need a couple types of holders. I have an armband I wear while working out that I love, but use a different holder the rest of the day.

While You Exercise:

When you’re working out you want easy access to the iPod nano while protecting it from bumps, drops, and getting banged against equipment. For most of us that means using an armband.

If you do a solid workout, you’ll want to get a sweat-resistant armband. (You don’t want your nano getting wet.) I have a neoprene armband with a plastic film front cover and a cord keeper. Armbands do have a downside, as it can be hard to see the display if you want to change the playlist.

If you’d prefer to carry your iPod nano when working out you’ll want a slip-proof cover. I suggest a silicone cover thick enough to also provide a little shock absorption if (or is it when?) you drop it.

At Work (or While Commuting)

Some professions require a conservative, professional image. If a put-together appearance is critical you’ll want a leather iPod nano cover. You can get them in wallet-fold or flip-top styles. They’ll project the image you need. Consider a leather case that has a lining to protect your nano from scratches.

Is your job less staid and conservative? You can probably use any casual iPod nano cover. (lucky you) Think about whether you’re more interested in practical features or in something stylish, and read from the next paragraphs.

Practical Features:

Decide if you need a belt clip (or want to clip the nano to your purse or pocket). If you’ll be outside much you’ll want weather protection - perhaps waterproof.

If you’re a klutz like me, you’ll want to protect your iPod nano against bumps and drops. Ditto for if your nano will be rattling around at the bottom of your purse or briefcase. Look for a hard case, or at lease one with reinforced corners.

Fashion options:

Most nano owners are more worried about practical stuff. Some of us like to look good with the nano as well. You can get designer cases, cases with Swarovski crystal accents, even cases made with high-energy prints. My website has a review of designer iPod nano holders to give you some ideas.

Know what you want now? Go forth and buy! If you’re still not quite sure, stop by my website for a few ideas. Whatever you decide, you’ll enjoy your new iPod 3G nano.

Tips to Send Flowers the Next Day

May 19, 2008 · Filed Under Relationships · Comment
by Aurelia M. Fleur

You can send flowers for any occasion. Anniversary florals as gifts, birthday flowers, even new baby flowers are all excellent ways to say “Hope this brightens up your day” And even though there are those who still love to use their neighborhood florist, most people now prefer to use an online flower delivery service for stunning floral arrangements at discount prices.

The biggest holidays to send flowers are Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Valentine’s Day. But flowers can be sent for any major holiday and for all religious beliefs.

Usually for Valentine’s Day, red roses and chocolates are the time-honored gift. But by selecting different rose varietals and colors, you can make each Valentine’s Day unique and special from the last.Do you know your girlfriend’s, wife’s, or significant other’s favorite color? Then it’s just as simple to send them white or designer roses as it is to send red roses. High quality online florists now have a diverse array of roses and lilies in colors you don’t normally see at a local florist.

For men, blue roses are a popular favorite. For that special guy in your life, you might want to send them multi-colored birthday flowers, like red and white or blue and yellow. When those colors are similar to their favored sporting team, get ready for a big hug.

At the beginning of each May, you should double check your calender to see when Mother’s Day falls, and then order your flowers as early as possible. Unfortunately, if you’ve waited that long, there’s still a chance that many people have already gotten guaranteed delivery times before you. Either way, do the best you can by ordering your mother her favorite flowers and writing a memorable card that shows you put some thought into your gift.

When deciding on funeral flowers and sympathy arrangements, floral arrangements can be sent to either the funeral parlor or to the bereaved’s home. Whether you choose subdued pastel colors or bright sympathy flowers usually depends on the personality of the departed. Also you can always allow the florist to select the correct funeral flowers for the occasion or to uniquely customize them. Sending unique sympathy gift baskets to family members is also a tender sentiment.

Custom Embroidery on Company Shirts

by Epolos Articles

Embroidered company shirts are a great idea for any type of company - large or small. If you own a business, then you know that image is everything. A company’s image says many things about a business - from how they treat their customers to what their rates are likely to be. Following are three messages you can get across with custom embroidered company shirts.

Did You Know that Embroidered Logo Shirts Can Inspire Confidence in Your Customer Base?

We’re Safe: Embroidered company shirts instill trust in your customer base. This is especially true if you operate a service-oriented business. How many times is the following safety advice dispensed by experts, “Look for a uniform, or a company name or logo displayed on the uniform.”

There are literally thousands of small businesses who fit this profile. Lawn care service providers, painters, movers, gardeners, roofers, etc. can all benefit from embroidered logo shirts. As these types of businesses tend to be micro businesses who can really grow, embroidered logo shirts can be an an inexpensive first step in the growth process.

We’re Professional: The best way to make your business stand out among the crowd is a uniform, professional presence. Custom embroidered company shirts can provide this easily. Your company will beat out the competition easily as your embroidered shirt will make it easier for customers to remember you.

Many small service-oriented businesses don’t even have so much as a business card. They “wing it,” so to speak, never upgrading their image. One of the best ways to grow a business is to mimic what large, successful firms do. While you may be small today, operating and acting like the larger firms will get you among their ranks that much sooner.

Success is Organization: Customers like to do businesses with professionals. This is why the business suit is so popular. It sends a message, namely, “I am an expert, I know what I’m doing and I can get the job done for you.” This is exactly what customers want. They hire your business to handle their problem - whatever it is. Custom embroidery on shirts is a simple, effective way to brand your business for success.
