What Is The Real Story Behind The Hoodia Oprah Connection?

May 22, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment
by Reagan Miers

If you’ve shopped around for hoodia online you’ve likely read about the supposed hoodia Oprah connection. You’ve probably seen claims that Oprah Winfrey endorses hoodia or that she uses it herself to reach her weight loss goals. You may have even seen such bold claims that Oprah endorses a specific hoodia product. You’ll be surprised to learn that there may not be any truth behind the hoodia Oprah connection.

I have not been able to prove there is a hoodia Oprah connection. I have been to Oprah’s website and searched for “hoodia Oprah”, as well as just plain “hoodia,” and no results were found for either. I have never read anything that proves Oprah has used hoodia, or that she has featured it on her show. Until I find evidence that tells me different, I don’t believe that there is a hoodia Oprah connection.

I will say there is a minor connection to hoodia in Oprah’s magazine, O. The websites that claim Oprah uses hoodia point to an article, “Diet Pills: The Next Generation,” that ran in O’s July 2005 issue. The magazine was hard to locate, but I managed to find one on eBay and purchased it. I wanted to find out exactly what Oprah said about hoodia. The article was very surprising.

When I turned to the article I saw a large picture of a San tribe member holding a piece of the hoodia gordonii plant. I immediately thought there was probably a significant connection after all. However, after reading the entire article there was absolutely no hoodia Oprah connection. The article wasn’t even written by her and there were no quotes from Oprah about hoodia.

The article opens with the first two paragraphs briefly talking about the history of hoodia and the popularity of hoodia diet pills. However, the article doesn’t talk very highly of hoodia supplements. In fact, here is a direct quote from the article, “So far, however, there’s little proof that the supplements are even mildly effective: Most contain only small, probably insignificant levels of Hoodia extract” This is hardly a ringing endorsement for hoodia supplements - let alone a specific brand of hoodia!

The remaining text of the piece talks about the race between pharmaceutical firms to discover the latest miracle weight loss supplement. There is no mention of hoodia gordonii past the first two paragraphs. As you can see, the magazine does not mention a hoodia Oprah connection, or endorse that Oprah uses the weight loss supplement herself.

With so many websites using Oprah’s name to make consumers believe there is a hoodia Oprah connection, there is bound to be some legal actions taken in the future. Oprah’s legal department will no doubt come down on these people. They are twisting a small mention of hoodia in an article in Oprah’s magazine to make it appear that Oprah herself endorses their brand of hoodia, when in all honesty, that is just not true.

Five Easy Steps to Project Delegation

Delegation in practice

I was working at my desk not long ago when I had the realization that it was so late that I had actually just started the regular work day for my team in Asia. I had been working these US/Asia double shifts for so long that my frustration, with the project and with my team, was rising. However, the team was bewildered by my reaction. They were doing everything I assigned to them. How could I be upset?

Why indeed. I had fallen into a common trap. I thought I was delegating, but instead, I was simply assigning tasks and retaining ownership of everything. It was during one of these marathon work sessions that I realized I needed to make big changes - and fast. I began to look at when projects worked, seemingly without my intervention and when they didn’t. Breaking it down, the solution jumped out clearly. There are five steps to successful delegation.

1. First, you must clearly define the task. What is it that needs to happen? What is your desired result?

2. Select the team or individual that you want to accomplish this result.

3. Third, inform the individual of what’s being delegated. And also let other people in the organization know that this person is now responsible for this task, so they know this is the go-to person and they don’t keep coming to you.

4. Keep in place a monitoring system, so you can ensure that progress is being made.

5. After the task is done, complete a final review. Look at lessons learned and ways to improve moving forward.

The steps above are logical enough - the key is putting them into practice. I started immediately with the project that caused so many work hours for me. I looked at my Asia team to determine who had the ability to lead the team on-site and drive the deliverables per the plan. Before assigning the team member the task, I set clear objectives and goals. Successful delegation requires a clear end result. And everybody needs to understand what results are expected.

I found that Helen had strong skills and a willingness (as well as bandwidth) to take on additional responsibilities. Now that I had the right person, I had to provide the authority needed so she could actually achieve it. This is a vital point. Trying to retain authority while expecting her to deliver will never work. You may also need to teach her how to do what you want her to do. You can’t just delegate and walk away. You must ensure that the rest of the team understands this shift in ownership.

After you’ve truly delegated, you need to monitor the progress. Look at the plan. Make sure that there’s some scheduled goals and meetings to ensure that the tasks are being met. I usually do this with in 1:1 meeting. This is a schedule time for us to talk about anything that may be of concern as well as upcoming due dates and milestones. These informal discussions can provide an excellent framework for feedback. If necessary, provide some direction. Give your team the objectives and the clear goals to keep them on track. Provide encouragement. You want to boost morale and make sure that people are making progress going forward. A good way to do this is by monitoring with milestones. A subtle but effective form of monitoring is using these milestones.

Create small, interim deliverables to serve as checks-and-balances on the forward movement of a larger task. These milestones can provide a self-regulating form of monitoring, and a basis for progress reports (1:1 sessions).

What happens when you run into problems? When it comes to delegating, you need to keep it organized. Solid organization helps make sure employees know and can track their milestones. In my case, Helen started slipping on a key deliverable, so we worked closely until she was back on track. It was difficult for me because I just wanted to fix it, but I also knew Helen needed to retain authority over the Asia team - this required her to find the solution and implement it. How?

Structure. If the people you’re delegating to are having trouble, help them, train them. Establish the monitoring systems we talked about. Have milestones in place that will keep the task on track. Make sure they know that if they run into a problem, they can contact you. This may seem like extra effort but it will be short term and the long term benefits are many, including not only the deliverable at risk, but the entire delegated ownership and, who knows - bigger and better projects in the future. As for Helen, she overcame the short term concern and the project went on to deliver on time. Even better, I was back to just working the USA day shift!

Ultimately, performance and deliverables are in your control. Are you ready to make it happen? Go to http://www.delegatesuccess.com and take the readiness quiz.

Get your best investment in a Deck or Patio part 1

Creating a deck or patio is a great way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and enhance the value of your home.

Here are some upfront, Practical Suggestions:

Here are seven suggestions to guarantee that your investment into a deck or a patio is done properly:

1. Look at your local real estate market to ensure you’re making improvements that home buyers want and will pay for (even if you don’t plan on selling your house any time soon).

2. Develop a practical budget. A reserve of 10 to 20 percent of your budget should cover unexpected costs or changes.

3. it is very important to make sure you have good references on the professional that you hire. because you only want to work with a competent professional who has the time, the tools and experience to handle the complex installation problems that might arise with Decks and patios (even though they’re fairly straightforward projects)

4. Be sure to check building codes to learn about specific restrictions, standards, and regulations and work that into your project time-line so you get plenty of leeway to finish the project. In most municipalities, you need a building permit before you begin. (don’t forget this step!)

5. keep in mind the architectural style of your home when choosing the shape, style and materials. Try to keep your selection limited to no more than two building materials which actually gives you more flexibility in the construction process and in the final stages.

6. Even using just a single material will give you a very good look if combined with the appropriate outdoor furniture and landscaping. Don’t use too many different materials because it can lead to the area being too complex and result in a poorly executed construction.

7. Decks and patios have become popular spaces for entertaining, barbecuing, relaxing and for children’s play. Decks and patios are practical and valuable additions, as they typically recoup most of their original construction cost.

Those are some practical, upfront suggestions you can use no matter what type of patio or deck (or even ANY home improvement project) you want to build.

Herbal Aromatherapy and Incense

May 22, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment
by Louise Servage

Aromatherapy bases itself around the use of essential oils for the treatment and / or prevention of disease and is a gentle, healing art. Evolving over thousands of years, aromatherapy is a recognised form of medicine, reaching as far back as biblical times. It can be a supplementary, complementary or the sole treatment, treating the actual problem rather than covering it up as more conventional methods of treatment tend to do.

Aromatherapy doesn’t come with the, sometimes, unavoidable symptoms that are often associated with conventional treatments.

Aromatherapy is the systematic use of essential oils, known also as volatile plant oils, consisting of aromatic molecules, which are easily absorbed into the skin. Incense is a popular adjunct amongst aroma therapists.

Basic and herbal are the two types of Aromatherapy, the major difference between the two is herbal is based more on the use of herbs than on essential oils. The limbic system and emotional centre of the brain are activated by the use of herbs, killing microbes and fungi. Varying results can be achieved with the use of incense.

There are hundreds of herbs that are used in herbal aromatherapy, and this includes birch, mandarin, jojoba, lavender, jasmine, grapefruit, nutmeg, citronella, cajeput, clove, fir, gardenia, ginger, basil, lemon grass, lime, pine, rose, marjoram, sage, sassafras, spearmint, thyme, ylang ylang, rosemary, sandalwood, and patchouli, all of which are available in incense form as well.

One of the most commonly used herbs in herbal aromatherapy is Chamomile, and with its distinctive apple aroma it aids sleep and helps to soothe tired muscles. It also helps by encouraging emotional peace and calm within the body. Geranium works by refreshing and relaxing the body and helping to release fears and ease mood swings.

Herbal aromatherapy often uses lavender, a herb that helps accent self-expression and sensitivity, particularly for the introverted. It helps in the treatment of a variety of ailments and illnesses, from arthritis, aching joints and chest, to the common cold and flu.

Conventional medicine often treats the symptom but often not the cause. A major benefit of aromatherapy is that it helps to treat the actual problem rather than just cover up the symptoms. This means that patients will experience more of a long-term benefit rather than short-term satisfaction. For this reason herbal aromatherapy is popular throughout the world, particularly in the older cultures of the world.

Aromatherapy is commonly used as an alternative to conventional medicine, in some regions of the world it is the only form of medicine, some more enlightened doctors are recommending aromatherapy to their patients for certain ailments, as this form of treatment has no side effects or symptoms. The burning of incense in their surgery is a sure fire way of identifying these doctors.

Discover An Enjoyable Orlando Vacation

I can recommend all of the theme parks as an Orlando vacation devotee, but were you aware that the area is full of other excellent visitor attractions? There are enough museums, markets, shops, art galleries and more in Orlando to keep the most ‘hard to please’ person busy. Whilst a vacation here has been popular for many years now, the reason to visit continues to grow as the number of facilities and attractions increases.

Orlando is a welcoming and warm location that enjoys looking after people with its many restaurants, shopping malls, bars and clubs. Of course this article can only briefly hint at what you can do and see in Orlando while on vacation but there is so much more than just theme parks that it would be a shame not to mention them.

Starting out as a Sanford Fire Department collection the Central Florida Zoological Park zoo is home to more than 400 animals. Started for the preservation of exotic animals the zoo has a charity status.

For anyone that appreciates the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany then a large collection of his works is exhibited the Museum of American Art, where it has been housed since the early 1940’s. This is the place to visit for Tiffany art lover’s with the largest display anywhere in the world, including paintings, jewelry, pottery, glass and ornaments.

Whilst it may seem that Orlando has been created for the entertainment of children that could not be further from the truth as there is plenty here for everyone. For people that prefer the night, the list of things to do on an Orlando vacation is almost endless with families, teenagers and adults all well looked after.

If you are more technology and science minded then a trip to the Orlando Science Center will be a must as is a huge complex incorporating 10 halls with exhibitions everything from the Florida Everglades to the plains of Mars. An alternative to this would be the International Trolley and Train Museum which can be found along International Drive and has one of the country’s largest operating indoor G gauge layouts in a space of over four thousand square feet.

For something a little different there’s the Titanic Exhibition which tells the story of the ill fated Ocean Liner performed by a character from the ship; the displays contain some original salvaged items and at times the tour is very moving. Away from all the hustle is the wonderful Lake Eola Park in the heart of downtown; it has beautiful sidewalks in over forty acres where it is possible to spend a few peaceful hours.

How could anyone possibly visit Orlando without a visit to one of it’s famed theme parks? For people that dislike sitting around on a beach then a vacation in Orlando is ideal although there are certain times during the year when it is much busier than others.

How to Lose Weight Quickly

May 22, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment
by Anne Woodland

Whether you are following a rapid weight loss diet plan or trying to lose weight slowly, you are facing a life style change that is based totally on how your working week goes. If you need to lose weight quickly, then you need to be near perfect in executing your weight loss plan so below are some tips to help you lose weight, which should be part of your weekly routine. The factors that dictate the speed at which a person sheds pounds is quite complex; for example:

* Current mind frame * Family history * Previous mental trauma

Excessive weight causes many problems; some but not all are physical aspects. Whilst the number of physical and mental effects on an overweight person is great, it is amazing how these can be turned around when a person starts to lose weight. It must be said that most rapid weight loss programs will require some form of emotional support from close friends or relatives; regular exercise and a healthy nutritious diet are also going to be part of this plan. The diet plan must be flexible to your tastes other wise it will fail, put aside at least a quarter of an hour every day to carry out some form of physical activity like brisk walking, running or other type of cardiovascular exercise.

Do not worry if your weight loss plan is not producing results as quickly as you would like; everyone has a different metabolism and some will see results faster than others; this is perfectly natural so do not become despondent. In instances like these it is best to substitute a more rigorous exercise program to compensate and learn to listen to your body and adjust your diet plan accordingly. If you find a plan isn’t working as it should then perhaps you will need to change the diet plan as each person’s metabolism is different and you cannot expect every diet plan to work.

You may find that you are more comfortable walking than any other form of exercise; however, try to improve the pace you walk at as your diet progresses, remembering that you will look better when your fat is converted into muscle. Exercise often means a great deal of body fluids are lost and need to be replaced; whether on a rapid weight loss program or not, don’t forget the benefits of at least six 8oz glasses of water each day because it also flushes out nasty toxins as well. Avoid fat drenched deep fried foods which can also mean fish and chicken if you are eating the wrong part of the animal.

Foods that are grilled are by definition, not cooked in oil or their own fat which means once cooked they retain little or no fat so are better for overall health. Make sure that you aren’t avoiding carbohydrates altogether though as they provide your body with the energy it needs to function properly. A weight loss diet like this will enable someone to lose about a pound a day as they will be on anywhere between one thousand to fifteen hundred calories a day, but once they start eating more the weight will go back on again.

How to build big arms & a huge chest by working your… legs?

May 22, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment
by caleb lee

If you’d like to know how to build a bigger chest and monster arms… without… spending any extra time working those muscles out, then this article will show you exactly how to do that…

In fact, I will show you the little known secret of how you can build a huge chest and arms by working your LEGS!

Does this sound strange?

Many weight lifters bodybuilders may think so. But most of them have really small arms and an unimpressive chest.

You see, most bodybuilders waste all their time doing isolation exercises (that is: single joint exercises) for their arms and chest (often doing multiple types of exercises for each one) in an attempt to build a bigger upper body…

So why is this not a good thing?

This is a bad way to try to build a big upper body because one of the key factors of building muscle is making sure you increase your levels of growth hormone (GH), testosterone (T), and other “body chemicals”… these chemicals signal your body to “build more muscle NOW!” And that’s what you want!

Now, the best way to “jack up” the levels of these chemicals in your body (so you automatically build more muscle) is by intensely exercising your ENTIRE body… and not just certain parts (like your arms or chest).

So when trainees focus too much on doing lots of different exercises for their arms… and a lot of different exercises for their chest… they’re only working out small muscle groups and not putting their body under enough stress to signal muscle growth.

So what’s the answer?

The answer is to work out ALL of your body as much as possible. Especially the biggest muscles of your body. Like your legs and back and THEN your chest, arms, etc.

The best way to accomplish this is to start with multi-joint (compound) exercises and lifts like the Squat and dead-lift before you go on to isolation exercises like specific arm exercises (curls, pushdowns, etc) and chest exercises (bench press, dumbbell flies, etc).

So, if you want to build a shirt-popping chest and hulk-like arms then you need to work out your LEGS… follow the guidelines above and you’re sure to start building new muscle almost overnight!

Skin Care : Are Adeva Skin Care Products Effective?

May 22, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment
by Ray Lam

When it comes to carrying for your skin, both on your face and on your body, you want something you know will really work well, and that is good for your skin. There are hundreds of different things to try, and trying each one of them can be daunting at best. Some names you know you can trust, and others are new, and you aren’t sure what to think. Advertisements say a lot, but trying something out is what really tells you what something can do. In my family, I seem to have collected a lot of Adeva skin care products, though it is not something I set out to do.

Know anything regarding aveda skin care? One thing I can say to you for certain concerning this product line is that it smells phenomenal. Just step in their store and take a whiff of all they have to offer. Your mind will be set at ease from the comforting and relaxing aroma. With aveda skin care you get the benefits of plant extracts and natural ingredients. These components work wonders on your tired, over-stressed complexion. Just imagine how much abuse your delicate mug takes on a daily basis. Since your skin is often faced with such harsh elements, don’t you thing you should break out an arsenal of quality aveda skin care products to help revive it? So many people thing your skin’s condition has solely to do with what you consume. This is a misconception to say the least. Most of it actually has to do with the daily elements we typically encounter, such as sunlight, cold winds, moisture, heat and much more.

About five years ago, I came across an Aveda store for the first time when I was doing some random shopping with my wife. My wife and I began to browse and check out all the fine Aveda cosmetics and skin care lines at the store. The first thing I noticed at the store was their sales pitch. According to the sales person their products are made with natural botanicals and plant extracts.

Are you also interested in these products? If you do, then you should ask for a sample. You can always ask to sample something when you have doubts. Tell the sales person hat you’re interested, but would prefer to try Aveda cosmetics before purchasing them. Now, you should remember that these products aren’t drugstore cosmetics. That means that these products are a bit more expensive than Neutrogena. Nevertheless, the quality of Veda cosmetics makes it worth the price.

Ask for a sample! When is doubt, you can always ask to sample something. Let one of the store employees know that you’re interested, but would prefer to try Aveda cosmetics before purchasing them. To be frank, these aren’t drugstore cosmetics, folks. Therefore they do cost a bit more than Neutrogena. But, the Aveda quality is worth the price.

How to Choose the Right Colon Cleansing Product

May 22, 2008 · Filed Under Health and Fitness · Comment
by Michael Durban

Colon cleansing is a common topic for discussion today. We have all become aware that colon cleansing is vital to maintaining our health. In order to improve your body’s capability to function properly, removing whatever is lodged in your colon, such as mucus and waste is a must. With so many people investigating alternative medicines, the call for high quality products to use for colon cleansing has also increased. With this being the case, and the demand for these types of products growing steadily, many new products are being introduced on the market that claim to clean your colon effectively.

The majority of the products currently offered are effective and will give you the results you are after. Others will not meet your expectations. As a consumer the ultimate choice is yours, however there are some pointers to bear in mind.

The biggest way to cleanse your colon is to look at your diet. You should make alterations and begin eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, minerals, and drink a lot of water. Your diet should consist the way nature intended it and it should not be full of fried and greasy foods.

Laxatives should be avoided. Yes they will aid in bowel movements, but it will only remove what would normally removed from a bowel movement. The only benefit is that it speeds up the process. It does not affect the waste that is currently sitting in the colon.

You should be looking for a colon-cleansing product that will liquefy fecal matter from the colon. This will flush out the system thereby eliminating all the waste from the lower intestine.

You should learn about the product. Does a reliable manufacturer make it? Ask your doctor, or pharmacist, or take recommendations from other people who have experience with the product in question. Medicines that make claims to be “miracle cure” are not what you want. You are looking for a product whose effectiveness has been proven.

Finding the right products to cleanse your body may seem confusing, but with a little knowledge and research, you can find a reliable product that will get the job done. You can buy colon cleansing products at your local health food store and while you are there, you can consult with a knowledgeable employee who can recommend a good herbal product. You can also get good advice from a naturopath or herbalist on how to go about colon cleansing.

By learning more about staying healthy, we realize the importance of colon cleansing. Once you have found the right product for you ensure that it becomes part of a routine health regime.
